Traditional ostomy belts are thin, soft, and stretchy pieces of fabric that attach to the pouch or flange via belt tabs. These belts exert pressure on the pouch seal for added security and stability. Traditional ostomy belts attach to tabs, which are ear-like appendages located at the 3 and 9 o’clock positions on either the pouch or the flange. Your product boxes may have icons that indicate the presence of belt tabs. Some manufacturers, such as Hollister and ConvaTec, place the tabs on the pouch, while Coloplast places the tabs on the flange. Belts should be snug but not tight when worn.
Ostomy support belts also come in larger diameters with center belt rings that cover the flange adhesive. These wide, comfortable binders allow the elastic to form around bulges and other body shapes more naturally. Ostomy support belts may also provide some support for peristomal hernias and non-reducible hernias.
