Irrigation is a system of bowel management for a colostomy in which you wash out the colon with water, similar to an enema, through a stoma (surgical opening) in the abdomen. This irrigation triggers your body to empty your bowel. Irrigating your colostomy at the same time every day will help train your bowel to function on a regular schedule. Irrigation works best when the stool is firmer, and may be an option for those with descending or sigmoid colostomies.

Colostomy irrigation should not be rushed, and will take up to an hour at a time. With regular irrigation, many people stay free of drainage for 24-48 hours and may not need to wear an ostomy pouch between irrigations; a small pouch or stoma cap may suffice. This can provide a sense of control to people with colostomies. Irrigation products include irrigation bags (water bags), tubing, stoma cone tips, irrigation sleeves and clamps, belts, and faceplates for a one-piece pouch. The irrigation bags may come with a built-in thermometer to control water temperature. Irrigation kits can be used with both one-piece and two-piece systems.
