Test strips are used with blood glucose meters. With a testing strip, a small blood sample is collected to measure glucose in the blood at any moment in time.
The testing strip holds an enzyme called glucose oxidase. When the enzyme comes in contact with the glucose in blood, it triggers a chemical reaction. An electrode inside the glucose meter can measure the speed of this reaction and use that information to measure how much glucose is present in the blood.
